Fallujah Disability Support

About the program

ICF provides support to vulnerable children with disabilities, through a medical clinic in the under-served city of Fallujah. This clinic is housed in an old government building that was originally donated to an international organization, which has since ceased operations in Iraq.

This clinic provides support to children with a wide variety of disabilities, from mild to severe. Common conditions presented include paralysis (various stages), social and behavioural conditions including severe autism spectrum disorders, hearing and visual impairment, birth defects due to family inter-marriage, and disabilities as a result of injury.

Treatment involves general health consultations, physical rehabilitation, psychosocial support and in cases where there is a need for more advanced treatment or interventions, referrals to governmental or international institutions where children can get the necessary help and support they require.

The clinic also provides employment for local community members, including doctors, nurses, physical therapists, social workers, cleaners, and communications and administration staff.

Case Studies: Outcomes in Action

  • Aya's Story

Aya lives in Fallujah and is 15 years old. She suffers from a brain atrophy condition, which has limited her movement.

In her own words: "I have faced many difficulties from society due to my condition, and the constant feeling of being a burden to my family weighs heavy on my heart, as I am the only person in my family with a disability. I learned about the clinic from social media, and visited the center to receive the free services offered, to make it easier on my family. The clinic provided me with a wheelchair which makes it easy for me to move. I wish to continue with my treatment as I wish to walk some day and start my own family, and integrate into society as an active member".
